A package came for me in the mail the other day. It was from my in-laws.
My birthday is coming up and it was a surprise present from them!!!
Side note: WHY don't we send packages/letters in the mail anymore??? I get it, I do. It's faster/cheaper to fire off an email or a text. But really, do you know the joy I get from receiving something by mail?
(Seriously, if I didn't already realize it wasn't meant to be for me to grow up as Laura Ingalls Wilder, I would totally be all over living in the 1800's and receiving mail by Pony Express. However, if you've read my blog for any period of time, you'll remember the giant spider story. And my realization that outhouses are not my gift.)
Okay! Back to my story.
My in-laws sent a package. I love my in-laws. Have I told you that? And not just because they sent a package in the mail. They are truly wonderful people. They have put up with me for the past 10 years and for that I am forever grateful.
So Mr. Postman brings the package to the door and I grab the scissors. For some reason J.D. picks up the camera and starts firing away. (This is a pretty big deal in our house...let's just say the ratio of pictures taken by me and of me are a little skewed.) All the while J.D. says he doesn't know what's in the box.
So why did he feel the urge to take pictures?
I've thought about it and I think his women's intuition kicked in and he just knew we'd want to have documentation of my reaction to the package.
Here I am slicing open the box.
Not that you'd need that commentary to figure it out.
Wow.
Even the cords in my neck are excited.
And my three chins.
(Please remind me never to look down in the future.)
(Rule number one: Look down only with the eyes, Kandi...only with the eyes.)
"Ha!"
(Now I know what it is. It pleases me oh-so-much.)
"HA!!!"
(Apparently I throw my head back when I laugh.)
(Not a great look when frozen for all time by the camera. Hopefully not quite as bad in "real life.")
(Okay, rule number two: don't throw your head back when you laugh, Kandi.)
Now that, my friends, is a look of true happiness on my face.
Do you recognize the gift, yet?

How 'bout now?
It's the Hummingbird Helmet!!!!!
(New readers to my blog are scratching their heads and closing their browser windows right about now. If you've stuck with me and want to know the back story, click here.)
My father-in-law is a handy fellow. I really believe he can build anything he wants to. And when he saw my post about the Hummingbird Helmet (click the link above), he wanted to build me my very own Hummingbird Helmet.
He's got a great sense of humor, too. He also sent me a package of camouflage face-paint in case I want to (and I quote) "really get into it."
I'm smiling right now.
If it doesn't rain tomorrow, I will be outside testing out the helmet. There are still many young hummingbirds in the Northland that need some sugary fuel for their trek South.
And who knows? Maybe they'll like me so much they'll come back next year.
I'll be sitting in my lawn chair with my helmet on waiting for them.
:)

Oh my goodness - that is the greatest most thoughtful gift ever!!! I love the action shots of you - good job J.D. - but I am with you on why these are the only shots there seem to be of us in our family albums! But it is a look of pure joy at the end and I have seen that neck cord look on you - you get it when you are thinking about being excited - I can just picture you saying "What is it?" with that look!
ReplyDeleteNow you know we need pictures of you in action, right? I don't care how it is arranged - B., J.D., neighbors, mailman, even L. We want pictures!!!

Yay! I know you were thrilled!!! I can't wait to hear if it works. Side note - when is your actual birthday? Mine is 9/21. So Happy Birthday!

Awesome Kandi! We want pictures of you testing it!
ReplyDeleteThis is great. Such pure joy captured forever. Love the pictures. I can't wait to hear if it works!
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome! I LOVE hummingbirds. When I remember to put up our feeders, we get about a gazillion in our backyard and I have seen them fighting, mating, and just about anything else you can think of on our deck.
ReplyDeleteOur park down the street has about 20 feeders outside the Nature Center's deck, as well as hummingbird-friendly flowers planted directly underneath, and you can go out and see HUNDREDS right before your eyes! It's magnificent. :)
I want to see your helmet in action now! You have fantastic in-laws.
Oh TOOOOOO funny!!! I know you will wear it but know that I have already stole all of the humming birds that use to come to your window before putting your house on the market!!!! HA HA HA
ReplyDeleteWell, since it IS your birthday, I guess I will tell one of them to come try the HBH (Humming Bird Helmet). HA HA HA
Oh, it would be my dream to see that park and take some pictures of the hummingbirds! What a sight that must be...
ReplyDelete:)
Oh Ruth, you are TOO kind.
ReplyDeleteBut we both know the reason the hummingbirds are coming to your feeder now is because I took pity upon you and took my feeder down.
You're welcome.
;)
(HA ha ha!!!)
Oh my word! That is just the cutest/funniest thing ever!
ReplyDeleteHee hee...it really is cute, isn't it? And the helmet's not bad, either.
ReplyDelete;)
That's absolutely hysterical! I'm in love with your father-in-law now. What a hoot! I still have a paper milk carton in my pantry from 1984. My mother-in-law pasted her photo on the "missing person" ad on the back. She put it in with my Christmas present and said that a friend told her that was every daughter-in-law's dream gift. Hahaha! She's an awesome mother-in-law and I love her dearly. JD needs to take a photo of you in the yard with your helmet on and your face painted! I'd love to see that!
ReplyDeleteHa! I love that your MIL has such a great sense of humor!
ReplyDeleteI totally want to try out the helmet but I'm afraid all the hummingbirds have already flown South! Hopefully some are still here... :)
